If you're not familiar with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), it's the organization that collects, analyzes, and disseminates economic information for the United States. Here at the Montana Department of Labor & Industry, we work closely with the BLS to produce Montana-specific economic information.
In addition to producing economic info, they also put out some pretty slick videos explaining their information and its uses. For instance, the video embedded below shows how different BLS programs and surveys answer the economic questions people have at all stages of life.
In case you weren't counting, that's 12 different data sets and resources to help you make economic and career decisions, including:
- Current Population Survey
- Consumer Price Index
- Consumer Expenditure Survey
- Employment Projections
- Occupational Outlook Handbook
- Occupational Employment Survey
- National Compensation Survey
- Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses
- American Time Use Survey
- Jos Openings and Labor Turnover Survey
- Local Area Unemployment Statistics
- Labor Productivity
And in case you're not familiar with data from the Consumer Expenditure Survey or the Consumer Price Index, BLS also puts out handy articles to explain. The following article does so using everyone's two very favorite things: ice cream and bacon!
As you can see, economic surveys and the organizations that administer them are not only useful, but have a fun side as well!
